Have you ever heard of an underground dog fence? Sometimes referred to as an invisible dog fence®, they are designed to keep your dog within the confines of your yard, without the need of a physical fence. Pet owners may feel frustrated as they worry about the safety of their dog. Dogs enjoy playing outside, running to their heart’s content and an underground dog fence will let them do that.
How They Work
An underground invisible dog fence® works like this. You have a transmitter that is located inside of your home. This communicates a radio signal with your dog’s collar. They work together with the wire that encloses your property. When your dog gets near the boundary wire, he will receive a warning beep. Should he continue to go forward, he will then receive a safe but surprising static correction. In a few weeks or less, your dog will learn that he must stay inside of the yard.
Underground dog fence installation is a relatively easy process. Begin by connecting your twisted wire to the transmitter. Lay out your perimeter wire across your yard where you want the boundary to be. Splice the perimeter wire to the twisted wire. Now, you can test the system by bringing the collar over to the border until you hear a beep. If all systems are working, it is time to dig a 1-3 inch deep trench to bury the perimeter wire. If there are areas where you would like the wire to be above the ground, just mount that area to the yard with ground staples.
There are several thicknesses of underground dog fence wire. Most standard DIY dog fence kits come with a 20-gauge wire. Unfortunately, this wire is very thin and is likely to break after a few years. This is why it is a good idea to upgrade to a heftier gauge of wire such as a 14-gauge thickness.
There is an underground dog fence for every type of dog. There are systems for little dogs, big dogs and stubborn dogs alike. Some systems will accommodate an unlimited number of dogs while others are limited to two. Also be sure to check and see which one will work for the size of acreage you are looking to cover. When you read underground dog fence reviews, see which one gives you the most benefits for the lowest cost.
